I was only about four years old. My cousin Blessie who was three years older than me invited me to come to her house in the farm. We had to cross a river to get to their house. It was my first time to visit their farm. I was so excited when I saw my cousin Gladys who was my age.
A bunch of farm kids arrived and we decided to swim in the nearby river. Everybody could swim even Philip who was younger than me. I felt so jealous. I don’t know how to move on the water. I saw Gladys go to a deeper water and lie down and let herself get carried by the current. I thougth it was cool and easy. I tried to do the same. Just then I felt myself getting carried by a strong current. A rush of fear overcame me.
I struggled to stand but the current was drifting me away too fast. I was getting more and more nervous. I’m gonna drown! I’m gonna drown! was all in my mind. I tried to shout for help but no sound would come out from my mouth. Can’t they see me? I was crying in my mind. Just then I heard Gladys saying, “Look, Jena is swimming! Jena can swim! Then I heard Blessie said, “Oh, no she’s drowning!” When I hear what she said I felt relieved, Rescue at last!. She took my hand to help me stand. I was shocked! How could I drown in this? The water was only up to my knee!
